New Jersey Juvenile Hall Abuse Lawsuit
Several juvenile detention centers in New Jersey are being sued by survivors who were sexually abused by staff & other inmates.
Why are people suing New Jersey juvenile halls?
In 2010, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) published a report called Sexual Victimization in Juvenile Facilities Reported by Youth, 2008-09, which was conducted by the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS). According to the report, nearly 1/3 of the juveniles who were detained at the New Jersey Training School during the investigation—aka “Jamesburg”—claimed they were sexually abused at the facility.
Since then, the DOJ has published several other reports identifying the ongoing sex abuse crisis occurring in juvenile detention centers across the U.S., leading to some states passing new laws to help empower victims. In 2019, lawmakers passed the New Jersey Child Victims Act, which has given survivors significantly more time to file a claim for the abuse they suffered at a New Jersey juvenile hall.
How to qualify for the lawsuit
Survivors who are currently under 55 years old may be eligible for the lawsuit if both of the following apply:
- You were sexually abused by an officer, staff member, counselor, or another authority figure at the facility.
Note: Unfortunately, we cannot accept claims that only involve battery and other forms of non-sexual injury.
- You were under 18 years old at the time of incident.

- Free, no-obligation consultations.
- Pay NO FEES unless you win.
- Nationwide network of attorneys.
NJ Juvenile Abuse Lawsuit FAQs
I was sexually harassed, but not physically assaulted. Does that still count as sexual abuse?
Unfortunately, no. Because the New Jersey Child Victims Act only extends the claim filing time for survivors who were sexually assaulted, your case would not be eligible for the lawsuit if you were harassed without contact, such as receiving unwanted sexual remarks or being watched in the showers.
Have there been any major settlements for survivors?
In New Jersey, there have NOT been any settlements for juvenile sex abuse survivors. But in April 2025, Los Angeles County agreed to a $4 billion settlement for survivors who were abused in one of its detention centers. This was the very first juvenile sex abuse settlement of its kind, and legal experts believe that similar settlements may soon appear in other states like New Jersey and Maryland.
How much can I expect to win for a juvenile abuse settlement?
The value of your settlement would depend on the monetary value of the damages you’ve suffered and other individual factors. Because these settlement amounts vary for different plaintiffs, we can only provide you with the average range of damages plaintiffs have earned. Like with other sex abuse lawsuits, settlements for an NJ juvenile hall abuse claim are estimated to be worth at least $100,000 or more.
