Why are women suing hair relaxer brands?

In 2022, the Journal of the National Cancer Institute (JNCI) found that long-term exposure to chemical hair relaxers could increase a woman’s risk of developing uterine cancer. Based on the results of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences’ (NIEHS) Sister Study, women who regularly use hair relaxers may be over twice as likely to develop uterine cancer compared to women who do not.

After the JNCI’s study was published, women with cancer began seeking compensation against many hair relaxer brands, including big-name corporations like L’Oréal and Revlon. Lawsuit participants claim that these companies failed to warn customers that their hair relaxers were linked to an increased risk of uterine cancer.

How to qualify for the lawsuit

If you were diagnosed with any of the following cancers after using hair relaxer at least four times a year, you may be able to qualify for significant compensation. An immediate family member may also begin a claim for a loved one who passed away.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Due to state-issued statute of limitations laws, and the lawsuit’s strict eligibility guidelines, we unfortunately cannot accept claims for anyone diagnosed earlier than 2016.

We also currently cannot accept conditions such as uterine fibroids, polyps, or any other non-cancerous illnesses.

Hair Relaxer Lawsuit FAQs

What makes hair relaxers so dangerous to use?

Many brands of hair relaxer contain endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) such as parabens and phthalates, which have been found to cause a wide array of medical problems. Some of these health concerns include an increased risk of infertility, obesity, immunodeficiency, and type II diabetes.

Some professional, in-salon hair relaxers also contain chemicals that release the carcinogen formaldehyde when applied to the scalp.

How much can I expect to win for a hair relaxer settlement?

We unfortunately cannot provide an estimated compensation amount without knowing the specific details of your case, since each case is unique. However, hair relaxer settlements are typically awarded based on the following factors—which include, but are not limited to:

  • The severity of the victim’s cancer diagnosis
  • The amount of damages sustained (medical bills, lost wages, etc)
  • The strength of the victim’s case (how much evidence they have)
  • The place of exposure (at home vs. in a professional setting)
  • The victim’s age (younger victims tend to receive more)
Which brands of hair relaxer qualify for the lawsuit?

Most store-bought hair relaxer brands are currently able to qualify, but these are the most common brands being named in the lawsuit:

  • Dark & Lovely, made by L’Oréal
  • African Pride, made by Olive Miracle
  • No-Lye Relaxer Kit, by Ultra Sheen
  • ORS Olive Oil, made by Namaste, LLC
  • Olive Oil Relaxer, by TCB Naturals
  • Motions, by Strength of Nature Global
  • Just for Me, made by Soft & Beautiful
  • Creme of Nature, made by Revlon
