Hundreds of families are demanding compensation from major baby food brands, including Gerber and Beech-Nut, after batches of their products were found to contain heavy metals. A growing number of studies have linked early childhood exposure to metals like lead to an increased risk of Autism and impacted brain development.

Which baby food brands may contain heavy metals?

In 2019, the non-profit organization Healthy Babies Bright Futures conducted a national investigation examining 61 brands of baby food jars, pouches, and canisters for heavy metals. According to the study, 95% of all tested foods contained heavy metals, especially lead. Only nine of all 168 baby foods tested did not contain heavy metals.

Some of the most popular brands listed in the study include:

  • Gerber
  • Beech-Nut
  • Earth’s Best Organic
  • Parent’s Choice (Walmart)
  • HappyBABY
  • Plum Organics
  • Sprout Organics

A vast majority of affected foods contained at least two types of heavy metals. Even worse, 25% of all tested foods contained FOUR different heavy metals: lead, mercury, arsenic, and cadmium.

Why are parents suing baby food companies?

As of August 2026, nearly 500 lawsuits have been filed against Gerber and other baby food manufacturers. These lawsuits claim baby food companies knew some of their products could contain heavy metals, but failed to warn parents or alter their recipes, leading to an increased risk of Autism in children.

Because Autism is a neurological condition that can immensely impact a child’s life, in severe cases, affected families may be entitled to a large financial settlement from the lawsuit. Many parents involved have sued brands like Gerber for the following damages:

  •  Cost of speech therapy
  • Cost of special education needs
  • Cost of past or future medical bills
  • Potentially reduced future earnings
  • Possible need for lifelong assisted care
  • Pain and suffering, or emotional distress
