What is a meningioma?
A meningioma is a common tumor usually found in the brain, making up over 30% of all primary brain tumors. Around 80-85% of all diagnosed meningiomas are benign, meaning they are not cancerous. However, if a meningioma grows to be too large, it could potentially cause life-threatening complications by pressing against vital parts of the brain.
Though meningiomas can sometimes develop around the spinal cord, only intracranial meningiomas in the brain have been associated with Depo-Provera use.
Common meningioma symptoms
Meningiomas usually grow at a slow rate over a long period of time. For some people, it can take years for symptoms to show—and, in rare cases, they can simply not appear at all.
When symptoms appear, patients have been found to report the following issues:
- Frequent headaches
- Numbness
- Weakness in the arms or legs
- Balance issues
- Hearing loss, or ringing in the ears
- Changes in smell
- Blurred vision
- Fatigue
Complications associated with meningiomas
In addition to the general symptoms above, meningiomas have also been found to cause severe medical complications, especially when they grow too large. These include:
- Long-term vision loss
- Seizures (epilepsy)
- Permanent nerve damage
- Paralysis & motor skill issues
- Brain herniation
- Speech problems
- Memory loss
- Personality or mood changes
What damages can I recover by joining the lawsuit?
In June 2026, Pfizer officially agreed to settle over 5,500 Depo-Provera claims, but details about the settlement have not yet been revealed. This means the lawsuit could potentially be closing soon, so attorneys are encouraging patients to act quickly before they lose the chance to file new claims.
But for current and new cases, meningioma survivors may be able to earn a substantial amount of compensation for the damages they suffered. Participants in the Depo-Provera lawsuit tend to seek the following types of damages:
