Uber’s safety preferences

In 2024, Uber released a mobile app update that makes it easier to access four safety features meant to protect riders from sexual assault. These safety features are not new, but they can now all be accessed from the same menu on the app. Uber launched the update worldwide for iPhone and Android.

If your device’s updates are up to date, you can access these features by following these steps. Tap “Account” in the bottom-right corner of the app, and then scroll down and tap “Settings.” Scroll down again and tap “Safety preferences.” When you open the Safety preferences menu, you’ll then have the option to turn on all of Uber’s safety features.

Lyft’s Women+ Connect program

Whenever a customer submits a ride request, a driver in the area will either choose to accept it or let another driver accept it instead. Though this system gives drivers the option to deny any requests that they may view as unsafe, drivers don’t receive any details ahead of time about the rider except for a first name. This information is not always enough to protect drivers from potentially dangerous riders, so Lyft began testing a new program to protect female and non-binary drivers in late 2023.

In February 2024, Lyft officially launched Women+ Connect for drivers nationwide. By accessing their driving preferences, female or non-binary drivers can turn on Women+ Connect so that the Lyft app will prioritize ride requests from female or non-binary riders. Female and non-binary riders are opted into this program by default, but you can turn it off by going to “Edit profile” in the Lyft app.

Lyft’s app also offers additional safety features for riders and drivers, including Smart Trip Check-in and location sharing. If you’re in a Lyft and experiencing an unsafe situation, you can request for an ADT security professional to connect with you via call or text. If necessary, your ADT representative will contact 911 and help the authorities find your location and identify your attacker. You can also silently alert 911 directly from the Lyft app.
